A volunteer read Maybe Something Beautiful to her daughter’s Pre-K class in Orlando, Florida, for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event.
On October 25, children all over the world gathered to listen to volunteers read Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood. The book was written by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael López. Volunteers read the book to kids in classrooms, libraries, and community centers. The book is written in English and Spanish. Volunteers read it in both languages.
The book-reading event is called Read for the Record. A group called Jumpstart organizes the event every year. Jumpstart is a group of volunteers that helps children all over the country succeed in school. They work hard to make sure every kid starts kindergarten with everything they need to do well. Four college students started Jumpstart more than 20 years ago. Today, more than 45,000 college students and community volunteers work for the group.
Maybe Something Beautiful is about how people use art to make their community a better place to live. The book was partly inspired by murals in East Village of San Diego, California. Rafael Lopéz, the book’s illustrator, helped create these murals with his wife Candice Lopéz. She is a community leader and graphic designer. Many people around country saw what a difference the murals made in San Diego’s East Village. They were inspired to make their own murals to improve their communities.
Rafael Lopéz also participated in the Read for the Record event. He read Maybe Something Beautiful to children at the Austin Public Library in Austin, Texas. He and other volunteers who took part in the event were asked to post about it on social media sites and on the Jumpstart website. Jumpstart hopes that the number of people who read the book at the same time is enough to break a world record.
