The race for President of the United States has begun to take shape. The general election is still more than a year away. Election Day will be on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. However, the primary elections will begin in early 2020. Primaries are elections in which candidates compete to win the nomination of a political party. They take place in every state.
President Donald Trump, a Republican, announced in June that he will seek reelection. He may face challengers in the Republican primaries, but he is strongly favored to win the Republican Party nomination. Right now, the political action is mostly on the Democratic Party side. More than two dozen individuals entered the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. The field of candidates includes former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Senator Kamala Harris of California, former San Antonio mayor Julián Castro, and a number of others.
The earliest primaries—the Iowa Democratic caucuses and the New Hampshire Democratic primary—will be held in February 2020. Long before any vote has been cast, the Democratic field has begun to narrow. Democratic National Committee (DNC) officials organized a series of televised debates involving the candidates. With so many candidates participating, the debates had to be held over two nights. The first two debates took place in June and July of this year. There are several more planned for 2019. To reduce the number of participants in upcoming debates, DNC officials are requiring that candidates show a certain level of support. The amount of support for the candidates is measured in terms of how much money they have raised and how well they are doing in the polls.
In addition to electing a President and Vice President in 2020, Americans will also choose one-third of the Senate and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. Eleven states will also elect a new governor next year. The presidential race, however, is the only one that is truly national. The competition takes place across the entire country.
