First Lady Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, and their daughters Sasha and Malia waved to the audience on the last night of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
The 2012 Democratic National Convention began on September 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Over the three-day event, important members of the Democratic Party and other guests delivered speeches that gave support to President Barack Obama. They also talked about the values that are important to the Democratic Party.
On the convention’s first night, the mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Julián Castro, gave the keynote address. In his speech, he talked about the American dream and how important it is that all children in the United States be given opportunities to succeed. First Lady Michelle Obama later spoke about her life with President Obama and why she believes he should be reelected. The First Lady also talked about her admiration of people who serve in the military and their families who support them.
On the second night of the convention, former President Bill Clinton officially nominated President Barack Obama to run for reelection. He also explained how the Democratic Party and Republican Party have very different plans on how to run the country. He argued that President Obama has the better plan. In a surprise early appearance, President Obama came out on stage to thank President Clinton for his support.
On September 6, the final night of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden officially accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination to run for reelection. In his acceptance speech, Vice President Biden spoke about what it is like working with President Obama. He also said that, if reelected, he and the President would continue working to improve America’s economy.
President Obama later gave his acceptance speech and talked about why he believes he should be elected for a second term. He also spoke about the importance of good citizenship. He said, “We, the people, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together.” President Obama concluded that he has never felt more hopeful about the American people. He said that, if he is reelected, he will continue to work for a more prosperous future for America.
In the November 6 election, President Obama and Vice President Biden will be up against the Republican Party’s ticket—former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. The presidential campaigns will continue until Election Day. There will also be three presidential debates and one vice-presidential debate held in October. What the candidates say during their campaigns and in the debates will help the American people decide who to vote for in November.
