Hou Yifan makes a move in the 2011 Women’s World Chess Championship.

Hou Yifan (HOH EE•fahn) is a chess prodigy. This means that she has an amazing talent for playing the game of chess. In December 2010, she won the Women’s World Chess Championship. She became the youngest world chess champion in history. She was only 16 years old.

Hou Yifan was born in Xinghua City in China. When Hou Yifan was only three years old, her parents saw her looking at chess pieces. They wanted to support her interest, so they bought her a chess set. After playing for only a few weeks, she was able to beat her father at chess. When Hou Yifan was five, her parents hired a teacher to help her become even better. When she was nine, she played the coach of China’s national chess team. He saw that she was a special player. He invited her to Beijing to play with the national team.

In January 2011, Hou Yifan won a “Sportsperson of the Year” award in China. In November 2011, she took part in the Women’s World Chess Championship in Tirana, Albania. She played against Humpy Koneru of India. Hou Yifan scored enough points after eight games to become the world champion again.
