A group of volunteers made repairs to a home for a retired veteran.

After retiring from the military, Doug Adams and his wife Deb Lewis wanted to continue serving their country. They wanted to help educate Americans about the challenges that many military veterans and their families face.

To accomplish their goals, Doug and Deb planned a yearlong journey they call the “Duty, Honor, America Tour.” They are traveling across the United States to get their message out. Deb is driving an RV painted with patriotic images of a bald eagle, the United States flag, and the Declaration of Independence. Doug is bicycling most of the way. He is averaging about 60 miles each day. Daisy, the family Chihuahua, is along on the tour, too!

Doug and Deb started their tour in Fort Drum, New York, on October 7, 2010. The couple plan on traveling to all 50 states by October 2011. They will fly to Alaska and Hawaii. In all, the tour will cover about 16,000 miles with stops in cities, towns, and military bases along the way.

At each of their stops, Doug and Deb tell people how they can help veterans and their families. They share stories about the work people have done in other communities. Doug and Deb’s motto is, “If you need help, get it. If you can help, offer it.”
