Members of the Maine-Endwell Little League team of New York celebrated their victory in the Little League World Series championship game.

The 2016 Little League World Series championship game featured Maine-Endwell Little League of New York facing off against East Seoul Little League of South Korea. On August 28, more than 22,000 people packed Howard J. Lamade Stadium in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to watch Maine-Endwell fight hard for their 2–1 victory.

The game turned into a defensive battle as Maine-Endwell’s Ryan Harlost faced East Seoul’s Junho Jeong in a pitching duel. Harlost gave up only five hits, one walk, and one run, striking out eight batters. Jeong gave up only three hits and two runs, striking out nine batters. Neither team gave up a run until the fourth inning, when Maine-Endwell scored two runs to make the score 2–0. East Seoul got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a home run by Yoomin Lee. However, Maine-Endwell’s pitching and defense helped them hold on for the victory. Maine-Endwell became the first U.S. team to win the championship since the team from Huntington Beach, California, won it in 2011.

The Little League World Series is held each August in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The first Series was held in 1947 with 12 teams participating. In the championship game, Maynard Midget League of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, defeated Lock Haven All Stars of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, with a final score of 16–7. At first, only Little League teams from the United States participated in the tournament. Later, the tournament was opened to teams from around the world. The first victory by an international team came in 1957, when the team from Monterrey, Mexico, defeated the team from La Mesa, California.

To qualify for the Little League World Series, teams compete in regional tournaments. All of the players are 12 or 13 years old. The Series starts with 16 teams. Eight regional champions represent different parts of the United States. Eight international champions represent different parts of the world. The U.S. and international teams do not play one another until the final game. In the championship game, the top U.S. team plays the top international team. Of the international teams, Taiwan has won the most championships with 17. Of the U.S. teams, California has won the most championships with seven.
