Workers walked on a cable of the new East Span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.
California has a beautiful new bridge that opened in September. It stretches across part of San Francisco Bay. People driving between the cities of San Francisco and Oakland use this bridge. It is called the East Span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.
The new bridge takes the place of an old bridge that was damaged by an earthquake in 1989. The new bridge is very strong and will not be hurt by an earthquake. It has a path for bikes and for walking. At night, LED lights help make driving safer.
One person has watched the steel bridge being built day and night for more than 12 years. His name is Joe Blum.
For years, Joe Blum has been taking photographs from above and below the bridge. He worked close to the builders. He took pictures of them putting together each part of the bridge. He watched them work in rain and fog. Blum wants his photos to show the strength, courage, and skill of the ironworkers.
Joe Blum’s photographs are so good that they were shown at City Hall in San Francisco. People who use the bridge can now learn more about the workers who built it.
