President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris
The United States presidential election took place on November 3, 2020. The votes were counted. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were declared the winners. However, President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have yet to concede, or accept defeat. So far the majority of their challenges to the election results have been rejected by the courts. Vote recounts in Wisconsin and Georgia confirm Biden won in those states. Additionally, on November 23 the General Services Administration (GSA) approved Joe Biden’s team to begin work. The GSA is an government agency that helps coordinate the change of president.
The United States uses a system called the Electoral College to elect our president. Current tallies show that Joe Biden has 306 electoral votes. Donald Trump has 232. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win. The elected president and vice president will take office on January 20, 2021.
The 2020 United States presidential election was historic in many ways. About two-thirds of eligible American voters participated. This was the highest voter turnout in more than 100 years. More than 100 million Americans voted early. This was the highest level of early voting in our country’s history. Joe Biden received more than 80 million votes. Donald Trump received more than 73 million votes. Both candidates received more votes than any other presidential candidate in history. Joe Biden will be the oldest person ever elected president at 77 years old. Kamala Harris will be the first woman and African American and Asian woman elected vice president.
