Hiding the World’s Tallest Tree

Would you play hide and seek with an ant? an elephant? Which would be easier to find? The world’s tallest tree is named Hyperion. And it is hiding.

You won’t be able to find it, though. Park rangers protect the tree by not telling people where it is. They are afraid that too many visitors could harm the tree.

Hyperion is a coast redwood. It stands in Redwood National Park among other coast redwoods. So, most people wouldn’t be able to spot it.

Coast redwoods grow to more than 300 feet tall. Hyperion is about 380 feet tall. This is about as tall as a 40-story building. The tree is more than 600 years old. The oldest coast redwood is more than 2000 years old.
