When Governor Chris Christie gave his State of the State address on January 8, the New Jersey Legislature gave him a standing ovation before he even began to speak. Both Democratic and Republican members of the Legislature are pleased with the job the Republican governor has done in leading New Jersey’s recovery from Hurricane Sandy. They give him credit for putting aside political differences for the good of the state. In the days following the hurricane, Governor Christie was constantly touring the affected areas. He also surveyed the devastation with President Barack Obama.

In his address, Governor Christie indicated that there is still much more work to be done. He said that more than 40,000 New Jersey families are still unable to return to their homes. Christie has been working to make sure that his state gets the federal relief funds it needs to help rebuild. The hurricane, which made landfall on October 29, 2012, caused the most damage to communities along the Jersey Shore. Christie is very fond of the Jersey Shore, and the devastation there has affected him personally. When he was a kid, his family would often spend their vacations there.

Christie grew up in Livingston, New Jersey. He was recognized as a good leader in high school when he served as student body president and captain of the baseball team. After graduating, he earned a political science degree at the University of Delaware and a law degree at Seton Hall University. He began his career in New Jersey politics in 1994 when he served as a lawmaker for Morris County.

Christie was elected governor of New Jersey in 2009, and some hoped he would run for President in 2012. Instead, Governor Christie supported his party by delivering the keynote speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention. After watching Christie lead the hurricane recovery in New Jersey, some news reporters began calling him “America’s governor.” Many have asked him if he will run for President in 2016. He says that he would be “more ready” by then, but he has not said that he will definitely run. Right now, he remains focused on rebuilding the storm-torn communities in his state.
