Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, won the presidential election on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. He will become the 45th President of the United States. Before Election Day, polls, or political surveys, showed that his Democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was ahead in the race, so many people were surprised at the result of the election.

The United States has a complicated election process called the Electoral College. Each state gets a certain number of electoral votes based on its population. When citizens vote for President, they actually vote for electors who say they will vote for a certain candidate. These electors then cast their ballots in December. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to become President. While Donald Trump won the needed electoral votes, he lost the popular vote. That is, Hillary Clinton received more of the total votes from those who came out and voted. This is only the fifth time in U.S. history that a presidential candidate received more of the popular vote but lost the election.

It was a close race and there were many heated arguments leading up to the election. That is why some people were very happy with the result, while others were not. Now that the election is over, President-elect Trump sees this as a time for working together as a country. In his victory speech on election night he said, “To all Republicans and Democrats and independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

Before running for President, Trump was a businessman, not a politician. He also had a reality television show called The Apprentice. The presidency will be the first elected office he’s ever held.

Some people who supported Trump hope that his presidency helps the economy recover in places where it hasn’t. In 2008, there was a huge economic recession and many rural areas and places that depended on manufacturing jobs are still struggling with unemployment. Others, who did not support Trump, are concerned about some of the language that he used during his campaign that was demeaning to women and minorities. They worry that his words might become policies that discriminate against these groups.

Donald Trump will be sworn in as President on January 20, 2017. Between now and then, he and his advisers will select people to work in his Cabinet. He will also talk to President Barack Obama and his team to make sure that the transition between Presidents goes well. In his speech about the election results, President Obama reminded the nation that both sides want the best for the United States. He said, “We have to remember that we’re actually all on one team…. We’re not Democrats first. We’re not Republicans first. We are Americans first. We’re patriots first. We all want what’s best for this country.”
