Girl Scouts crossed the Talmadge Bridge as part of their 100-year celebration in Savannah, Georgia.
Savannah, Georgia, was host to many Girl Scouts in March 2012. Girl Scouts from all over the country wanted to visit the city. It is where Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scouts 100 years ago!
On March 10, more than 3,000 Girl Scouts walked across the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge. The Bridge crosses the Savannah River between Savannah and Hutchinson Island. The crossing stood for the group moving from one century to the next. About 2,000 younger Girl Scouts crossed a smaller bridge in Forsyth Park in Savannah. They carried daisies that they made from paper. Juliette Gordon Low’s nickname was Daisy.
After the bridge crossing ceremonies, all the Girl Scouts gathered together in Forsyth Park. They had a party with music and sing-alongs led by their national song leader, Melinda Caroll. They made crafts, swapped homemade pins, and listened to storytellers.
March 12 was the anniversary of when Low started the Girl Scouts. On that day, there was a sunrise ceremony in Forsyth Park. On a large video screen, Girl Scouts in Savannah watched as Girl Scouts from around the world took part in ceremonies. Later that day, the national leader of the Girl Scouts, Anna Maria Chavez, visited the house where Juliette Gordon Low was born. Many people visit the house each year to learn more about the woman who started the Girl Scouts.
