More than 120,000 balloons floated to the floor of the 2016 Republican National Convention on July 21. The traditional balloon drop happened on the convention’s final day after Donald Trump accepted the Republican Party’s nomination to run for President of the United States. The Republican National Convention takes place every four years. At this kind of political convention, party members meet to nominate their candidates for President and Vice President. They also develop the party’s platform—its ideas and goals. This year’s Republican National Convention was held from July 18–21 in Cleveland, Ohio.

To complete the Republican ticket, Donald Trump picked Mike Pence as his running mate and nominee for Vice President. Trump is a businessman, author, and television personality. Pence is a former six-term member of the U.S. Congress from Indiana and the current governor of that state.

During the four-day convention, important members of the Republican Party gave speeches and talked about the convention theme, “Make America Great Again.” Melania Trump, wife of Donald Trump, delivered a speech on the first night of the convention. She spoke about immigrating to America and becoming a U.S. citizen. She also talked about her husband’s love of America. U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, the chairman of the convention, gave a speech on the second night. He spoke about the importance of unity within the Republican Party and within the country.

On the convention’s third night, Mike Pence formally accepted the nomination for Vice President in a rousing speech. Pence spoke about how he and Donald Trump, if elected, would work to improve America’s security and economy. Speaking about Trump, Pence stated, “He is tough. He perseveres.”

Donald Trump concluded the four-day convention with his acceptance speech. He talked about how he would lead the nation if he were elected President. He also spoke about the problems America faces and how he plans to fix them. Trump said, “Together, we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace.” He promised to work to improve the quality of life for all Americans.

In the November 8 election, the Trump–Pence ticket will compete against the Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine, as well as other third-party and independent candidates.
