On October 10, 2014, Malala Yousafzai (yoo•SUHF•zy) was awarded the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. At just 17 years old, the children’s rights activist from Pakistan became the youngest person to receive this honor. Malala is known throughout the world for speaking out for girls’ right to education.

The Nobel Peace Prize is an international prize awarded by the Nobel Committee, a five-person group chosen by Norway’s parliament. Malala shares this year’s prize with Kailash Satyarthi. Satyarthi is a children’s rights activist from India. He is a leader in the movement against child labor and slavery. The Nobel Committee said that both winners were recognized for their efforts to improve the lives of children around the world.

Malala and Satyarthi will share this year’s $1.5 million prize. They will also receive a diploma and a medal in a ceremony held in December in Oslo, Norway’s capital city. At a press conference in Birmingham, England, Malala said that winning the Nobel Peace Prize was encouragement for her to continue her work. She added that the award was for all the children of the world whose voices need to be heard.
